Ok, I’m getting really confused here. I think :HKU: has done a pretty good job screwing things up. I’m pretty confused at the moment about the whole thing. So did Mr. Li donate the money to the faculty or did he donate it to the university. I think this makes a big difference. If he donated it to the faculty, then I guess the university has a better case.
In an email to the university, the vice-chancellor said:
I reported to you earlier the extremely exciting news that the University has received a pledge from the Li Ka Shing Foundation…
… it is the wish of Mr. Li Ka Shing Foundation to support the general development of the University and research and academic activities in the broad area of biomedicine…
However the vice-chanellor in this morning’s South China Morning Post said:
The university proposed the change to thank Mr Li for a $1 billion donation to the faculty.
So is the donation to :HKU: or the faculty. In any case, I still have reservations to the naming of the faculty. Acknowledge Mr. Li by some other means. Not by naming the Faculty of Medicine. Give him the business center or something like that.
