I had my first on-call night as an OG intern. Sleep was pretty good. I managed to get 4 hours of sleep last night which was pretty uninterrupted, may one or two calls in between but in general pretty decent sleep. Besides the sleep, everything is very different. I must say I suck at OG. I really need to dig up all my OG notes for a review because I’m having difficults at work. I am so lost last night. Luckily the nurses were pretty helpful. There were many instances where I just wasn’t sure what I’m suppose to be doing. The MO’s were pretty nice too. They helped a lot and it’s generally pretty easy to locate them. It’s going to take some time getting use to all this…

During the downtime last night, I was able to upload some CSI onto my PSP. I watched one episode of it, and for the first time since getting my PSP, I found a bright spot. I think there’s at least two spots on my PSP. One stuck in red and the other in white. I know there isn’t much I can do about it. I’m pretty damn sure I didn’t see those spots when I got the machine. I mean I looked pretty hard on the screen in all black to look for bright spots, but I still managed to catches these. I think they may have developed after I got the machine. They aren’t that visble, so I’m not going to get all pissed off with Sony just yet. It doesn’t really affect anything. Now that I have CSI on my PSP, I think I’m going to bring my PSP to work every day! haha…

I just realized that I haven’t actually blogged about graduation dinner. I haven’t had time to write about it the last few days. We had our graduation dinner at HKJC on the 29th of June. I thoroughly enjoyed myself that night. It got off to a slow start as people were arriving, but once dinner started (which was pretty late) it picked up. It was good that we had a few bottles of wine for our table. Everyone was pretty happy. The food was so-so. I honestly didn’t really like it. I thought it was pretty average. One professor got pretty excited, and he started drinking with us. Anyway, we kept on filling his glass so it was pretty happy. The only thing is we were short 1 bottle of wine, and we had to get a bottle of house wine which was pretty shit. After HKJC, our group went down to Brsi which was the highlight of the night. Alcohol kept on coming that night. It was pretty cool how everyone wanted to buy a round of drinks for everyone. Shots came in 2 dozens, and we used up all the shot glasses there. Once the round was over, someone will volunteer to buy the next round. It was good. A few people got pretty drunk. The place got a bit messy. I think we broke a few glasses, someone vomited all over the place, it was not pretty. What a good night! I’m just wondering when we’re going to have another night like that. I know for sure it’s not going to be any time soon. I hope everyone’s done well, and hopefully nothing bad happens. I’ll have some photos up soon. I also welcome people to send me photos to put up!

The actually size of the film was too small, so it didn't really cover my chest.... I can only imagine this to happen more and more often as our population become more and more westernized.

Everyone had to go through the mandatory health checkup before going to work for the Hospital Authority. I had mine today. It was a pretty mundane process. Everyone had theirs at a different location, mine was in Central. The doctor was actually pretty friendly, but I guess when I say friendly, I really mean casual. It was a relatively informal physical examination, with the doctor skipping corners. Anyway, I didn’t really write to comment on how the doctor performed. I actually had a pretty funny incident with my chest x-ray. I’m not sure, but it seems to me that x-ray films only comes in one size here at the clinic. The radiographer told me to hold a deep breath, which I did. 5 minutes later, he called me in again for a repeat. Turns out that my first film was too small. The actually size of the film was too small, so it didn’t really cover my chest. I was spilling out on all 4 sides. It wasn’t long and wasn’t wide enough. I had to take another film with a smaller breath.

How is this done overseas? A rough guess will put at least 40-50% of western population at my size. It seems that film companies have different size for different population, so that they can skim on material cost. They would then sell some XL films to hospitals and clinics. It seems to me that this clinic that I went to didn’t have any XL films available. So what happens when a westerner steps into their clinic? They would have been turned away. I can only imagine this to happen more and more often as our population become more and more westernized.

If you have been at school yesterday, you probably heard the talk about MPS. You then had a lawyer giving you very good reasons why you should be protecting yourself on top of the coverage by the Hospital Authority. I myself feel a need for additional protection. This is for the just-in-case scenerio.

Anyway there’s some confusion about the subscription. I was wondering whether we pay the full fee for protection until 31 January 2006, or a proportional rate for protection until the end of January 2006. I gave HKMA a call to clarify this point. From the conversation I gathered that we should be paying the full fee. The coverage will begin on the 1st of July 2005 and end on the 30th of June 2006, and then we pay the fee for the second year.

If you are subscribing you should be sending a check for the full fee for first year interns.

Sitting in my first day of class right now. It’s pretty boring stuff. I was pretty sleepy during the morning session. Right now they’re talking about stress during internship block. I think one of the reason why we get this session is because every year, there’s always a few cases of depression if not suicide. Anyway, we’re being taught how to deal with our stresses. We have quite a few full day sessions. This is a few days of boredom. Pretty intense boredom.

I think my internship assignments aren’t going to change after all. I’m not going to have any orthopedics placement after all. I’m kind of disappointed, but I’m actually quite happy about my placement. It’s already better than some people…

[Update:] Wow, I didn’t realize it, but this is the number 1000 post on my blog. It’s come a pretty long way!

[Update:] Over the last 7 days, the intern forum managed to reach almost half a million request! Half a million! I’ve never had that much traffic to my sites. I usually get around 200K request a month here, but never half a million!

Something happened today in the forum. Someone posted the whole class’ phone number online unprotected on the world-wide web. I am very disappointed with this individual. The incident started with this person posting a message in the forum linking to a page outside of the forum which contains photos of pages from our “Medical Society HKUSU Handbook ‘02″. These photos contains phone numbers, email addresses, ICQ numbers, full name etc.

I must stress that this person does not have consent from the individuals, Medical Society, etc. He was acting alone. Inside the cover page of the handbook is a few lines of text which I quote

The personal information published in this handbook was collected with the consent of members of the Medical Society, HKUSU for the purpose of communication between members, office of the Faculty of Medicine, HKU and Madam SH Ho Residence for Medical Students. The use of this handbook is strictly confined to the above people. Reveal of content to non-members is prohibited.

If you only consider these few lines, this person is already violating the above. Posting the information online is revealing the content to non-members, and in a very severe way as well. Everyone in the world can gain access to these information.

Secondly without obtaining consent from other individuals, this person has violated other’s privacy. He has no right to post other people’s phone numbers emails etc. without consent.

If you have been to the forums, you require a username and password before you can gain access to the forum where people post their numbers emails etc. This username and password is protect this information so that everyone can post their information without worrying that it will go out to the world.

By posting the contact list online, this person totally defeated the purpose of having a username and password on the forum. We might as well let everyone gain access to the forum without a username and password.

I confronted this person through ICQ. I had to explain to this person that what this person did was not right, and is illegal. Here’s the transcript from our conversation if you click on continue reading. I just can’t believe how ignorant this person is. He totally don’t understand what he is doing is wrong. The good thing is right now the list is down, but I might have to take more action to stop it from going back up. I don’t understand why it is so difficult for him to understand what he’s doing is absolutely wrong. I had to pretty much threaten him with legal action before he took down the list. I know I might be going a little over the top threatening legal action, but I was genuinely concerned about the situation. I wasn’t going to knowingly let all this information get out into the public domain. Some of the stuff that I said in the transcript might not be entirely correct. I’m no lawyer, but I do know my rights. I totally respect this person which is why I removed any reference from the transcript, and I have refrained from mentioning any name in the entire post. I hope this person will respect our privacy.

I don’t know about you, but over the last few years I’ve been consistently receiving calls from insurance agents. For some reason, they know my name and my phone number. They call you up hoping to sell you an insurance policy. Some of these agents are graduates of :HKU:, they call up a whole bunch of people from the class asking them to buy something from them or working for them as a panel doctors for their company. The only way from them to have a large number of phone numbers of people in our class is if someone from within the class gave them the class list with the phone numbers on them. These people who pass on the class list to their friends are just like this person this morning. He essentially did the same thing by posting our information on the internet.

I hope this will not happen again. It’s very sad how someone within the class sold us out by giving out our phone numbers to people outside the faculty.
Show your support. Protect your privacy. Leave a comment, let this person know that you value your privacy.
[Update:] I decided to take the ICQ transcript down. Sorry…

We got the results early this morning. I think they actually released it pretty much on the dot at 9am. I’m kind of happy and kind of sad about my placement. Even though I put down Orthopedics for my first 9 preference, I didn’t get a single Orthopedics placement. I’m not quite sure how that happened. You have to keep in mind that we only have 4 rotations in the whole year, and that means I didn’t get any of my first 10 preference, not even a single one. It’s kind of weird. In any case, people who put Orthopedics down lower in their preference actually got Orthopedics. Everything seems to be pretty weird.

Besides not getting an Orthopedics placement, my placements are actually pretty good. If nothing changes over the next few days, I’m going to be spending most of my time at PYH. For some reason, I have 3 rotations at PYH. I didn’t expect that at all. Well, I was hoping for 1 rotation of Orthopedics some where else.

My first rotation is going to be at CMC, and then the rest in PYH. The good thing is there’s carpark at both hospital. Driving to work? I don’t have to travel very far. Everything is within 20 minutes drive.

With only 1 day before the internship placement is announced, there are still a lot of people who haven’t been to the forum. Up to this point, I think we only have around 130 members registered. There are still a lot of people unclear about how to gain access to the forum. I’m going to try to make this as clear as possible.

Point your browser to http://interns.moliu.info.

On the sidebar, there’s a link to the Forum site. Click on it.

It will prompt you for a username and password. Please use the pre-assigned username and password. By now you should all have it.

After entering the forum site, click on “Register” on the top right of the screen.

Fill in the forum, and click submit.

All done!

Ok, after you’ve done all that, please remember your username and password. You are still going to need to use the pre-assigned username and password to gain access to the forums site.

The pre-assigned username and password allows you to see the forum. Without that password, you won’t be able to access the forum at all. Alternative, you can save the username and password into your browser. That way, you won’t have to enter the username and password every time. However, only do this on your own computer, not on public computers.

The self-assigned username and password allows you to post in the forum.

The reason why we have two sets of username and password is because if we only use the self-assigned system, then everyone on the internet can register themselves and then check out all the phone numbers and personal information in the forum. We don’t want that to happen.

Having two sets of authentication hopefully protects this information.

Good luck tomorrow!

Only 9 days left until we find out where we’re going to be working. It’s pretty exciting. I hope I’m going to get what I asked for. I don’t think I’m going to get everything I asked for though. As with every year, student body from both :HKU: and CU will be setting up a joint forum to co-ordinate placement swaps.

Technorati Tags: CU, Forum, HKU, Internship, Yahoo!

My understanding is that the class from last year did this through a Yahoo! group. This year, some nice person has already done that and setup a group for this. However it seems that the class representatives this year are concerned that Yahoo! may not be suitable for this. Their concern is that with a sudden rush of traffic that we’re going to be generating, Yahoo! may temporary suspend our group hence preventing us from exchanging placements. I’m not sure whether Yahoo! has a cap on traffic each group can use during a specific time frame, but their server is definitely not going down. Anyway, it seems that I’ll be hosting the site just to make sure we don’t run into any problem with Yahoo!. To be honest, the likelihood of my site going down is probably higher than that of Yahoo!. However, I definitely don’t have any bandwidth limitations on my site so we don’t have to worry about the bandwidth limitations. I honestly don’t think we have enough people to cause any server to go down. Even if 300 of us try to login at the same time, any server should have enough power to handle the demand. Yes it may be slower, but it should be able to handle all that traffic. We’ll have to see how it actually goes.

In any case, make sure you stay in touch, and check your emails as our class representatives may have announcements to make soon.

Ok, I’m getting really confused here. I think :HKU: has done a pretty good job screwing things up. I’m pretty confused at the moment about the whole thing. So did Mr. Li donate the money to the faculty or did he donate it to the university. I think this makes a big difference. If he donated it to the faculty, then I guess the university has a better case.

In an email to the university, the vice-chancellor said:

I reported to you earlier the extremely exciting news that the University has received a pledge from the Li Ka Shing Foundation…

… it is the wish of Mr. Li Ka Shing Foundation to support the general development of the University and research and academic activities in the broad area of biomedicine…

However the vice-chanellor in this morning’s South China Morning Post said:

The university proposed the change to thank Mr Li for a $1 billion donation to the faculty.

So is the donation to :HKU: or the faculty. In any case, I still have reservations to the naming of the faculty. Acknowledge Mr. Li by some other means. Not by naming the Faculty of Medicine. Give him the business center or something like that.
